Chairperson

The chairship of the Council of the Regional Government alternates every two years between a Cree representative and a Jamésien representative. When the Chairperson is a Cree representative, the Grand Chief of the Cree Nation Government shall serve ex officio in that capacity. When the Chairperson of the Council is a Jamésien representative, he or she shall be elected by secret ballot by the majority of these representatives.

Council

The Regional Government is directed by a Council composed of 11 Cree representatives, 11 Jamésien representatives and one non-voting representative of the Gouvernement du Québec.

With regard to the Cree representatives, the Grand Chief of the Cree Nation Government sits on the Council of the Regional Government, along with ten persons appointed by the Board of the Cree Nation Government from among its elected members. Each member is entitled to two votes.

The 11 Jamésien representatives are appointed by the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy from among the elected members of the councils of the enclosed municipalities and non-Crees residing within the Regional Government’s territory. Collectively, these representatives are entitled to 22 votes, which are allocated among them based on the relative demographic weight of the population they represent, i.e., the number of residents in the enclosed municipalities and territory represented.

The representative of the Gouvernement du Québec is appointed by the Deputy Minister of the Ministère des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l’Occupation du territoire (MAMROT) from among its staff members.
